Underground and metro stations can be crowded, warm and noisy, with escalators, tunnels and frequent announcements. Not every station is step-free.
Before you go
Plan a route using step-free maps where needed, avoid peak times if possible, and look at station layouts in advance. TfL offers travel support and journey planning options.
Facilities and assistance
Staff at stations can help with directions and boarding. Some networks offer 'Please offer me a seat' badges and travel support cards.
On arrival or during the visit
Stand away from the platform edge in a quieter area. Use a travel support card if speaking feels hard.
Changes and contingencies
If a line closes, staff can suggest alternatives. Have a backup route and a place to pause.
Practical access considerations
- Use step-free maps where needed
- Avoid peak hours if possible
